Overview
The 991.1 was the biggest structural rethink since the 996: nearly four inches more wheelbase, a largely aluminium body, and an electric steering rack in place of the hydraulic one. The last of those was the controversy; the first two are why the car works so well.
It is also the end of a line. Every ordinary 991.1 Carrera has a naturally aspirated flat-six that revs to 7,800 rpm, and the market has priced that fact in as turbocharging spread across the range. There is no intermediate shaft here and bore scoring is rare rather than epidemic, so the engine conversation that dominates the 996 and 997 largely stops.
What replaces it is complexity: PDK, adaptive dampers, active mounts, and an infotainment system that has aged much faster than the car. Budget for the head unit and insist on gearbox service records.

GT3 RS brings the 4.0 L. The manual, wingless 911 R arrives in a run of 991 cars and immediately becomes a collector item.
Known issues
7-
2014 GT3 only. Porsche recalled every car built and replaced the engines.
- Coolant pump failure Major
All 991, more commonly on higher-mileage cars.
- PDK mechatronic faults Major
All PDK-equipped 991.
-
Isolated reports on 991.1 3.8 L engines. Nothing like the frequency seen on the M96 and M97 — but not zero, so it is worth a borescope on a high-mileage naturally aspirated car.
- Centre-lock wheel torque Major
GT cars and any 991 optioned with centre-lock wheels.
- PCM infotainment aging Minor
Pre-facelift 991 in particular; the 2017-on system is markedly better.
-
All 991, far less frequently than on the M96 and M97 engines.
